Emerald care: why gentle cleaning matters
Scratch resistance and resistance to breakage are different properties. Emerald’s Mohs hardness does not make it immune to knocks or damage along fractures.
A gentle approach
GIA recommends warm, soapy water and gentle scrubbing. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning: vibration can aggravate fractures, and heat can affect materials used in clarity enhancement.
Heat and chemicals may also damage the stone or alter fillers. Before repair or cleaning, tell your jeweler that the piece contains emerald and share any available treatment documentation.
Choose a care routine for the actual stone and setting. If either appears damaged, ask a qualified jeweler to examine it before further wear or cleaning.
