Emerald care
Emeralds deserve careful handling both as loose stones and after setting. Their resistance to scratching is different from their resistance to impact, and inclusions or treatments can affect how a stone should be handled.
Gentle cleaning
Use lukewarm water, mild soap and a gentle touch. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaning. Heat and unsuitable chemicals can damage an emerald or affect fracture-filling substances. If you are unsure of a stone's treatment or condition, ask a qualified jeweler or gemologist before cleaning it.
Wear and storage
Protect emeralds from knocks and pressure. Remove emerald jewelry before activities that could expose it to impact, strong chemicals or heat. Store pieces separately in a soft pouch or lined compartment so they do not rub against other gemstones or metal.
Setting and repair
Have a qualified jeweler assess the gemstone and the proposed setting before work starts. Tell the jeweler about any known treatment and provide the available report. Inspect each loose stone and confirm its condition and treatment information before mounting, polishing or alteration.
When to ask for help
If appearance changes, a setting loosens or a stone receives a hard impact, stop wearing it and seek professional advice. Do not attempt a home repair or treatment.
